Spark Plug Wires
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 10:16 AM
I don't know what you folks use for spark plug wires but I found a nice product.

I found this stuff at Wal-Mart in the craft section called Wacky Wire. It comes in 9 different colors on 9 different spools. Sells for $10. The different colors allows a nice detail effect to color coordinate the engine bay to the body/interior color. It's a perfect diameter for use on 1:24 and 1:25 scale kits. I am using it also for fuel lines and brake lines.

When I first started building kits and wanted to get really detailed I used the spur melting trick. This wire stuff eliminated that by already being colored, easy to bend, and perfect size. I know there are plug wire/distributor kits at the higher end hobby stores but they are expensive. Give this a try!!

Gloss Black
Flat Red
Gloss Metallic Teal
Gloss Metallic Green
Flat Olive
Gloss Metallic Red

I didn't pay any notice to the gauge but it works well. I noticed that the silver and gold are a tad smaller diamter,

when you attach wires do you drill out holes in engine block ?? how do you attach to distributer to make it look clean ??

Yeah, the best way is to drill holes in the engine block and then glue the wires into the holes. As for the distributor, depending on whether it will be visible or not you can either just drill a large hole in the center of the distributor and glue all the wires into that hole (which is what a lot of the aftermarket ones do) or bite the bullet and drill separate holes for each wire. Try to center the hole on each distributor 'post' as best you can. Using some sort of magnification can help a lot in this situation. The holes don't need to be that deep either. Just enough so that you can 'anchor' the wire and give the glue somewhere to 'grip'.

Hey Longhair, having "old" eyes I have been using "some sort " of magnification for a while now. I find that the optivisor found in craft stores works great for close up detail work without getting your eyeball right next to the plastic. The modelers that wear glasses can keep them on, the visor lowers in front of them. So

Bit of a bugger that there-s no Wal-Marts here in Oz -
I get much the same thing at electronics stores - not the Tandy/Radio Shack sort of place, but a real electronics store - one that sells every type of electronic component that's made so people can assemble their own stuff - -
They sell tiny strands of colored insulated copper wire strands 140mm long with 25mm of the insulation stripped off each end - the strands are only 0.5mm thick - perfect for 1/24 scale cars. They come in black, blue, yellow, red, green and orange. Have a look for them.
Cheers.
