Sounds like you are looking for a 'home brew' method; can't help there, but Micro-Mark sells a product called (I think) 'Blacken It' for staining metal. If you haven't checked this site out, they have TONS of tools and supplies for modeling.

I've used graphite (ground pencil lead) in the past to darken up a chain.
