CA/Cement/Applicator care
Posted by elfkin on Saturday, August 23, 2003 11:16 AM
Hi Everyone,
I've started using brushes to apply CA and Cement to take advantage of caparilly action. However, I find getting the brushes clean is a real pain! Is it the cleaner? I am using lacquer thinner (just simple Ace Hardware brand). Is it the brushes? I am using 000 red sable. It seems I can get some of the stuff off, but the brush is still tacky. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have never had a problem with a red sable brush and liquid cement. Never tried using Ca with a brush. Ca breaks down with nail polish remover (acetone) though, you may want to try that.

Just my opinion...
Get rid of the brush. Capillary action will work, allright; it'll pull your CA all the way to the ferrule, and after it dries, you'll never get it out. Try this: Get a paper clip, sewing needle, or straight pin. Cut it so that it's an inch or two long, then chuck it into an X-acto knife handle. Instant applicator. The nice thing about this method is that you can now place minimal amounts in tight locations without having to worry about glue runs, drips, or puddles where you don't want it. Clean-up is a snap. When the glue starts to accumulate on the tip, you can scrape it off easily with a knife blade, or simply change to another pin, needle, etc.
