Aircraft Display Stands

Hi John. I havn't got any idea where you could find any stands but i made a few out of brass tube bent into a triangle at the bottom with an upright piece bent toards the middle and a small hole drilled into the bottom of the model and a piece of blanked off plastruct tube( just large enough or the stand to fit inside) inserted to the angle i required for the stand to slide inside. Being quite thin i thought that they looked better than the old kit offerings. hope this helps...Greg

Hi John, just a thought. You may be able to take plexi glass and make a stand. I am pretty sure you can cut it with a jig saw and I know that CA will glue it. Good luck!

Try using clear acrylic rods (about 1/4 inch or smaller)... drill 3 or 4 holes in a wooden base, and cut and bend the acrylic rods to support the plane from beneath.

You can even get pre-made wood bases at craft stores.

When you talk about acrylic rods where do you buy them? And are they the clear glue sticks?

I'm also interested in making display stands from acrylic sheet. I've cut the shapes I want with a roto-tool (pretty easy) and trued them up with a belt sander. I'm looking for a glue to fasten the parts without crazing the acrylic (the base is layered acrylic) as I would like to leave them clear instead of painting.
Second question......heating and bending acrylic has been mentioned....what is the recommended method of heating for a controlled bend?

If you can still find it, Methylene Chloride work about the best for "gluing" acrylic. It wotk like liquid cement -- in that it wll flow into the seam and make a good bond. Year ago it was sold in small bottles just for this purpose. But you know how the government is about anything that might hurt us -- it may be impossible to locate any more. Carbon Tetrachloride is the best thing I've ever found to clean plastic -- it won't melt or "craze" it. But if you don't work in a lab or have $500+ a gallon.....
