Use the foil that covers so margerine or yogurth containers, or if you are into wine (good bottles only!) the foil that covers the top of the bottle and the cork... Cut thin strips and there you go... Glue with superglue or epoxy.

British and US slings were often canvas webbing dyed green or khaki, so some texture should appear on them. Leather slings shoud be weathered, which lightens them, flattens the reflectance, and leads to cracking along the edges, while the canvas will fray along the edges.

masking tape cut with a sharp blade into a this strip works quite well, it has a good texture for canvas slings and being sticky on one side can help. The other method I use is the lead foil. Photoetch sets are available to add buckles and sling swivels, included in these are usually the metal/brass end pieces applied to each end of the sling to stop fraying. Verlinden makes a good set.
