Photo Etched Wooden Deck attachment to a 1:350 Essex

I'm confused as to how to attach the two piece wood flight deck onto my Essex Model. First, the lengths are different by about 1/8" on bow and stern. Second, the wood deck is too thin. My plan is to lay the wood onto the plastic. Any thoughts or recommendations?
