Alclad II whoopsie :/
Posted by BGuy on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 8:45 PM

Whoops:

While trying to do a subtle bit of work on an unpainted section of the airframe, I sanded off a good chunk of the Alclad II Aluminium finish on this piece.  What's the procedure for making repairs? Should I sand the whole section down, re-prime and re-alclad or..what?

Failure's not an option on this project, I'm afraid.

I have very limited experience using Alclad, but I would think that the best way to fix this is to sand the damaged area, re-prime, and re-paint.  From the looks of it, you could probably put tape on the panel lines outside the damaged area so that you limit your sanding and priming to the only the damaged area.  Good Luck!

I love the looks of Alclad but it is unforgiving.  While the surface is relatively hard it can be scratched and repairing these areas can be difficult.  I've had some success by sanding with 2000 grit wet & dry paper (used wet) followed by polishing with Novus #2.  The sanded area can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol or water (NOT mineral spirits). The idea is to feather the edges of the existing coating so that there will not be a distinct line between the old and new coatings.  The paint goes on so thin that a hard line will be seen if the feathering is not done correctly.  Also, the area will have to be reprimed if the sanding removes the primer.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks, EZ.  I'm already halfway through the lazy way of fixing the problem (i.e. just sand, re-prime and re-alclad), and I'll let you know how it turns out.
