Paasche v Badger - dare i raise this issue???
Posted by cml on Monday, August 25, 2008 11:12 PM

G'day everyone,

I've been wanting to purchase a gravity feed ab for a while.

After doing heaps of reading/research, I had my mind set on a Badger 100LG, however, when logged on to Dixie Art to order online (because i've never seen anybody sell them in Australia and the shops i've asked can't stock them, not to mention they cost twice as much in AUD), i see there is some delay issues with Badger products, i've been holding off ordering now for about 2 months.

However, i also see Paasche make gravity feed airbrushes, namely the VSR90 (with detachable colour cup) and Talon.

I've heard nothing but great news from everyone here about the 100LG and as stated, this is still the one i want, however, has anybody used the VSR90 or Talon yet?

I've searched through the history of the forum for someone's opinion who has actually used these airbrushes and can't find anything.

I'd very much like to hear opinions about the VSR90 and Talon and particularly, is it comparable to the 100LG, or, should i wait for the delays issues to be resolved with Badger (what is the cause there anyway?) and just go with the 100LG.

PS: i already have a Paasche H which is fantastic, but want something for finer detail work.

PPS: hopefully this thread won't turn personal - airbrush supporters seem to be more fanatical than soccer supporters.

regards

cml

I haven't used the new Paasche's, but I did use their VL for quite a while and enjoyed it. It was a hand-me-down airbrush that had some corrosion when I got it, and it got worse and eventually gave up the ghost.

As a replacement, I picked up a Badger 200G and 155. I love them. No plans on switching.

I don't have a 100LG, but the 200G uses the same needle, and is basically the single action equivalent.

I also know that Badger will stand behind their products- you won't have trouble reaching someone if you needed to. (To be fair, I've never attempted to contact Paasche, so not saying they don't.)

From my experience, Badger is like IBM- you can't go wrong buying them. But Paasche isn't a slouch either.

You mentioned availability in local shops- do the shops carry Paasche airbrushes and parts? That might be a consideration also.

I'm not sure what would be causing a delay issue- maybe MikeV could answer that?

Sorry if I'm just rambling.... Wink [;)]

Smeagol - well done, i just hope no Badger fans take offence...

JWB - thanks for the suggestions.  Certainly i've really only heard good things about Badger ab's and your experience is no different.

You make a good point about spare parts.  Down under here i can easily access spares for Paasche H and VL and also Badger 150.  I know the Badger 150 uses the same needle, heads, tips etc etc as the 100 and the local availability of spares was a huge factor in my decision making.

I have no idea if spares for the Talon or VSR90 are readily available...more visits to hobby shops needed to investigate, but i think i'll have to leave the wallet at home as a precaution.

If anybody else has comments about the Talon of VSR90, I'm keen to hear them.

I can't comment on the new Paasche's or the Badger units but I've used a Paasche H for years and have had a great deal of success with it.  I eventually wanted finer detail and subsequently bought a Paasche VL and then a Paasche VJr.  While these provided finer detail they each had their limitations and I wasn't totally happy.  Not long ago I bought an Iwata Revolution CR which is a gravity feed unit and am completly pleased with it.  Now, I use the H for general work and the Iwata for fine detail, although the Iwata would also work great as an everyday unit.

Both companies make excellent products.  If you can email me directly (kenbadger@aol.com), I can provide you with information on our Australian distributor, so you'll have a service and supply source closer to home.
