Binks Raven AB

Cleaning out some boxes in the basement I ran across some of the modelling tools and supplies I inherited from a deceased uncle about 8 years ago. He was a superb Monster modeller, especially his painting.

Anyways, amongst some other forgotten treasures was an old (late 70's/early 80's) Binks Raven airbrush. I've found very little info on the internet, but the few bits I've found point to it being used for fine detail work.

Have any of you used the Raven before? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it. I hope to give it a spin over the weekend, assuming I've got the right connectors.

Havent heard that name in a while. I remember back in the day they had ads all over the model mags for the Binks ABs. That was years before I ever tried my first AB and I thought the AB was a tool for the modeling Gods! A huge mystery surrounded them.

If I remember correctly, the Raven was the Binks double action airbrush (the Wren was the Binks single action brush).  From what I remember from those days, it was supposed to be a very good airbrush.  I would say give it a try, you might like it.

I think you are going to find that the biggest problem with owning a Binks airbrush these days is the fact that Binks withdrew from the airbrush field several years ago.  A while back, I needed to overhaul my Wren but couldn't find any replacement parts (seals, washers etc).  After several months of searching, I stumbled across a mail order business in Pa that supplied specialty tools to automotive restorers/hot rod builders. They carried Binks full size paint guns and had carried the airbrushes.  They had the spares in stock, but admitted that when they ran out, there would be no more.  I bit the bullet and purchased enought parts to do at least two more overhauls and what I thought might be needed for an occasional repair (tips and needles).  So when those parts are gone, the Wren is unfortunately consigned to the scrap pile.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Yes the Raven is the double action brush. I also have a Wren, but have never really gotten into single action AB's. I know, I know....it's not the brush, it's the guy using the brush that matters, but I started on a double action and have gotten used to it.

I'm looking forward to trying the Raven. I'll try to post some comments.
