Acrylic Primers?
Posted by Greasy on Monday, October 20, 2008 4:18 PM

I was reading thought the fourms and I have seen a few references to Acrylic Primers.  I am curious about them now.  I have started air brushing recently and I like it quite a bit.  I have always used Krylon Sandable primer from a spray can.  I would like to try primeing with my AB.  I don't want to mess with solvent base primers though my AB due to cleaning.   I have access to Testor/Model master and tamiya.  Do they have any good Acrylic Primers?

What are the pro and cons of them?
Thanks,

Jon

I use Model Master primer on a regular basis. You can choose between white and gray. You will get good results with them IF you take precautions with application. Make sure the models surface is CLEAN. Scrub with Joy soap or rub down with alcohol. Being clean and smudge free is the key. Allow the primer dry for no less than 24 hrs before applying masking/other coats. Placing the model under a low heat source will help set and cure the primer. However, you will run a small risk of the paint lifting with masking tape. Use a low tac tape.

Pros: easy clean up, no harmful vapors, primes well if applied right, can be polished smooth with fine grit sandpaper, much quicker dry time

Cons: does not adhere as well, will lift far easier with tape than enamel or lacquer primers

Hope this helps...

I agree with Andy.

A primer that attacks the surface a little creating "bite" is always better but if you must prime and it is acrylic I would use low tack tape on it as Andy mentioned......Tamiya masking tape is excellent.

As far as I know, Tamiya only hs lacquer based primers. The spray can primers are a lacquer based product, as are the "Liquid Surface Primer"s (similar to Mr Surfacer) in the 40ml jars.
