My first oil wash
Posted by Harvezter on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 1:10 PM

Well, I am building a Tamiya M3 Stuart kit. Its the first plastic kit I have built in many many years.

I bought a new Paasche Talon AB and used it to spray all the parts a drab khaki green. Then I used Krylon Matte Finish (i think this may be where I went wrong) as a clear coat over the whole model except the wheels and tracks.

Today I woke excited to do the oil wash. I went to Hobby Lobby, boughht some Grumbacher Academy Oil paints. I also had a can of ACE 100% mineral spirits. I mixed up a wash... a very watery one... and began brushing it on. I watched a video where the guy doing it mentioned using the straight mineral spirits over the whole top of the tank to start because it helped the color spread better. I did this.... and then i did the color... he also said you over do it, you can pat up the extra with a cloth...

I did something wrong because the model is VERY sticky! the cloth sticks to it, my fingers stick to it and well overall... it looks like horsedookie. I have no idea what I did wrong... my only thought is that I went wrong when I used the krylon  to clear coat the model before the wash.

Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I thought the model was looking good until I did this wash... is there anyway I can correct this huge error?

Thank you, Jared

hopefully, after the paint dries again, it will still look ok.. Cool [8D]

you may have to recover with the matte again, and use water based colors for the wash, etc.

just guessing, but most likely the krylon is dissolvable by the wash solvents.

always a good idea, when using "new" paint brands to types to test compatability ;)

I know that because....hehe, been there done that, with RC planes.
