PAINT BOOTHS
Posted by MIKE-B on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 2:22 PM

I am looking into getting a PACE 20" booth but on the website it has the blower at 148 CFM.

This seems way to low considering all I've read on this and other sites about spray booths.

Please help!

It does indeed seem a little skimpy, although depending upon where you plan on using it, it might be adequate.

By way of experience, I have a home-made booth that uses a 100 CFM bathroom fan.  My booth is out in my garage which naturally has decent ventilation, and under those conditions is decently adequate for low volume airbrushing.  On the other hand, when doing higher volume work, such as varnishing a display stand in which I'm spraying with a large tip pretty much wide open at 25-30 PSI (compared to normal use which is a small tip mostly closed at 15-20 PSI), the fan gets pretty much overwhelmed.  So while I find my 100 CFM setup quite adequate in my garage, I don't consider it suitable for use inside my house.

These questions show up often.

A fan may be able to move X amounts of air (cfm) if vented directly out a window or other opening. But most exhaust fans need to be ducted to the outdoors. Most exhaust fans needed for our uses are ducted through a 4" diameter pipe. A 4" outlet can only allow less than 40 cfm through it.

No two ways about it.....4" is 4".....moving air/exhaust has a physical presence.....you can only fit so much air into so much space.

It requires a 6" diameter pipe/hose to move 100 cfm.....8" will move just over 200 cfm.

I have learned much here from others about fumes....the dangers etc. But I must go with the 'smell test'.....if it doesn't bother me, I'm happy. Smart? Probably not. But without an economic bailout, I couldn't possibly afford to evacuate all the paintbooth air that is bad for me.

Not on SoapBox [soapbox].....just giving the facts of moving air.

I would be more concerned with paintbooth lighting and room to work. I vent my huge booth with 4" pipe ducting and unless my head is in the booth......there are no detectable odors or particulates in the air.

HTH

Late Edit: I DO wear a filter mask while painting.....choose your own type, but the are a good idea!

I have the PACE 20" booth and it works great for me. I want to build a box around it with a light and some shelves when I get a chance.
