Finishing a natural metal finish (alclad 2)
Posted by darth_trader on Thursday, November 20, 2008 10:05 AM

Fellow Modellers,

I'm about to shoot my P-38J with some Alclad 2 (already primed).  I was wondering what you guys put on top of Alclad for protection prior to applying decals?  Do you still shoot Future on top, proceed with decals, then put another cote on top?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks! Smile [:)]

I have only done one aircraft in Alcad, and did not future before applying my decals.  I had no issues with the majority of my decals- National markings etc. went on just fine.  However I did have some minor silvering with some of the tiny stencil decals.   The next time I do a plane in Alcad I think I am going to use future to set any stencils.

By coincidence I am working on a P38-J also.  Have not decided if I am going NMF or if I am going to do a gray\olive drab bird.

A little OT, sorry, but what the heck is "silvering"? I have seen this mentoned many times here, but I don't know what it is. Can you describe it, or post a pic?

Silvering occurs when there is an air pocket under the decal. Makes the clear portions look silver.

There is normally no need for a clear coat over Alclad for decals.
