Need help with drybrush & wash color guidlines
Posted by wyoroy on Monday, November 24, 2008 4:54 PM

I'm attempting dry brushing and a wash for the first time.  I know how to do it, problem is what color wash & dry brush do you use for aircraft?  I have a chart that recommends/suggestions what color would match the base color for armor but nothing on aircraft.  Just want some general guidelines.

what color wash & dry brush do you use for aircraft?

I do aircraft and armor washes the same way... Burnt Umber washes, sometimes black on very dark finishes, Raw Umber/Yellow Ocre on light finishes, sometimes greys, depends on the color and amount of wear & tear I wanna depict... I drybrush with progressively lighter shades of the underlying color...

The main difference in my aircraft vs armor washes is the amount of paint I use in the wash.  Armor washes are heavier on the paint side... I use way more pastel in weathering aircraft than I do armor.

I've never even seen a "chart" for washes... I just figure the color should be darker than the base color.. Unless I want the wash to depict dust that's down in the nooks & crannies.  Then I do a light "earth" color, usually tan.

Mike Thanks for giving me some feedback on this topic.  I'm trying to create myself a reference sheet for dry brushing and wash.  I have some good information from Daywalker but I wanted to gather more on what colors go with what.

I was hoping that when I posted this topic people would be more than willing to share what they know.

Again I'll add what you gave me and put it all together.

I have already compiled a reference sheet for armor.  Consolidated information from books, magazines and asking armor builders.

If you have any other information you think may be helpful add it to the post.

Thanks a bunch.

If you would be willing to share the information I would like to take a look at it.  For all my washes I use dark Greys/Blacks and Brown.  But I have never been very good with washes.

 Thanks.

Jon, I'm more than willing to share.  I have it in a MS Word format right now but I can convert it to what ever works best for you.  Remember it's still a work in progress and as I get more information, tips and ideas I'll forward you the updated version.  Also if you see or have something that I missed please send the information my way also.  Like I posted before I want a reference sheet for us to be able to refer to all in one spot.  Give me till tonight or Wednesday and I will send you a copy.  Thanks for your input.
