Fixing a finish *Need your help!*
Posted by Boba Fett on Friday, November 28, 2008 9:26 AM
Yesterday (after all that turkey! Dinner [dinner]) I sprayed two coats of Model Master Acryl Italian red on my Ferrari 612 watchumacallit. After it dried this morn, the paint had a pebbely texture. Did I hold the brush too close? Too far away? Not thin enough? Also, how do I fix it? Please help a desperate kid! Big Smile [:D]

What you have is called  orange peel. Pretty common with gloss paints. IIRC, it comes from too heavy an application. You have two options to get rid of it.

One is to strip the model down and start over.

The other is to buff it out. You may need to go to your LHS and and get a buffing set. These have sand paper bonded to foam pads with grits up to 32000. If you can't find that/don't have an LHS, try an auto parts store. They may have some of the same grits in sheets. Wet sand and bring down the unevenness. The finest grits will actualy bring back the gloss.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I was thinking of buffing it out. Will Future hide it at all?

I don't think so. You'd need a really thick layer in multiple coats to even the surface.

If it was me... which it has been .... I'd wetsand with 2000 grit and then use tamiya buffing pastes.
