airbrush for armor
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 4, 2003 8:28 PM
I'm looking at getting an airbrush to aid in painting 1/72 and 1/35 german armor (also some 1/48 planes), but i dont know what to get as i've never had an airbrush before. What sort should i look for. Also, I know that getting a compressor is better than propellant bottles, so can i use a variable compressor used mainly for inflating tires for the airbrush as well? Thanks for all you help

I am a big fan of Badger airbrushes and recommend the 150 or 155 as an excellent place to start. Look at http://www.dixieart.com/ for the best on-line prices. Your tire air compressor is usable but not directly. Get a five gallon air tank and regulator. Fill the tank to about 80 psi and set your regulator to 18psi. This is what I do and it has worked very well for me for many years. Whatever you do stay away from the Aztec line of airbrushes.

Derek,

Along with Swanny's excellent advice I would point you to another post where I gave some recommendations to a question like yours.

Stick with Badger-reasonably priced, reliable and easy to dismantle. Stay away from propellant bottles-you'll be broke and disappointed. Get a compressor or Swanny's air tank and regulator/moisture trap.

thanks for the help, i'm gonna get the anthem. I've already got the compressor and 5 gallon air tank at home, but i still need the regulator/moisture trap. Any ideas where to look for those? There were a few on www.dixieart.com but for like $50. Is that a good price? I've never really looked around for them before.

That's about what they sell for, although there is one from Harbor Freight for $20 here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42035

I'm not sure of the quality though.
