JIm,

Yes, wash flows better on gloss finish. Your plan of putting on a gloss coat and applying a dull coat later is good. Plus, you get the extra benefit of ease in applying the decals onto the glossy surface.

Is it necessary? Well, washes give realism to kits in that it creates subtle shadows on panel lines, for example. But hey, modeling IS for you, so the necessity for a wash or a matt coat afterwards depends entirely upon your liking. As has been said, the only person you have to please is yourself.

Hope this helps.

Applying a wash - help!

Hi folks,

I'm just about to apply a wash to an Apache Longbow. I've just returned to this hobby and have never really done much weathering before. Any tips? I read somewhere that you get a better flow of the wash if the entire model has a gloss finish. I suppose I could do this and then give it a matt finish after all is said and done. Is this really necessary? I don't like the idea of building up too many finish coats.

Any ideas/advice/instructions would be great.
