Masking problems
Posted by traveller on Monday, April 27, 2009 10:44 PM
Guys, before I throw in the hobby in frustration, how do I get rid of the glue residue from tape on my painted models? It does not seem to matter what tape I use, the marks are still there. I have tried to lift the tape straight after painting, and have left the paint to cure for 24+ hours, and still the residue remains. Also, same for the canopies, even with BMF. If I get canopy masks, the problem is not so bad. Any hints would be much appreciated.Angry [:(!]

Have you tried Tamiya tape?

I have had good results from taking a fresh bit of tape and "dabbing" it over the leftovers. Sometimes it takes a few goes, but usually works well if you haven't tried rubbing it off with your fingers.

I have not had any problems with using Tamiya or Scotch masking tape.  But alias, what kind of paint are you using ?  If possible (depending on the paint your are using), use rubbing alcohol to get rid of the glue.  Also you could try to cote your painted sections before masking.

Thanks for the info, and I read another post. I use Tamiya and blue 3M tape with the same problems. What I will have to do, and I forget to, is try removing the glue by either alcohol, or using the body oil method. I may also get a sheet of glass and put the tape on that before I place it on my models. The paints I use are mainly Tamiya and Gunze, all the others are too hard to find in my local area. Thanks again!!Smile [:)]

Traveller

If you use rubbing alcohol on these paints, IT WILL slowly remove the pigments !!!  After reflecting on the paint that you are using, I would suggest that you cote your model before masking or use Plastic Prep which is less aggressive.
