Is it me or the Airbrush?
Posted by smeagol the vile on Monday, May 4, 2009 10:48 PM

I am at my wit's end with this Airbrush.

I have a badger 200, single action, internal mix airbrush.  I can NEVER get the thing to spray right, it comes out in to small a stream, comes out in bursts, even when spraying thinner.  I have cleaned it over and over, no difference.  Is it just the AB or am I doing something wrong?  If it is the aB, I need to update, what do you suggest as a step up (Around 100 or so)

If it sprays in bursts, you may have a leaky needle bearing.  Take a look at this page and see if it helps.  If you've ever pulled a needle with dried paint on it through the bearing, you may have damaged it.  The 200 should be capable of doing very nice work.  Badger will replace the bearing free.

Yeah, I'm with Don, the 200 (I have one) is an excellent brush. Mine is the "old" head style and is considered a detail brush with a crown regulator and incredibly precise control. Easily a better airbrush than I am an airbrusher.

Sounds like the needle bearing. Return it to Badger and they will replace and tune your brush up.

So long folks!

It wouldn't be worth the cost of shipping. All it will be able to do is very large areas. You'd be better off with a rattle can.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

well thats what I use my ab for, large, solid color parts, or many solid color parts at once, I always detail with a brush.  (plus, rattle cans are espensive, not thinned well, and have given me alot of problems over the years)

Maybe it's you AND the airbrush.   I had a badger and could never get good results with it.   I switched to an iwata and have no problems.

The best modelers seem to be able to use any tool well.  I never had any luck with those 'testors' airbrushes with the removable heads.  But the best modeler I know gets amazing results with me.

I'm not that good, though.  I had to shop around and try to tool that I was able to get good results with.

Steven, your question had been asked by you and answered by many on this forum many times before. You just need to go back and read those answers.

My first question to you: Did you figure out how to connect the airbrush to your compressor yet? What airhose do you use now? How do you thin your paint now? A picture of the connection would be very nice.

Yea... Im not a moron.  the reason I didnt keep posting is I fixed my problem, my AB is connect, if it wasnt, it wouldnt burst, just wouldnt be a strong stream, or wouldnt be strong enough to pull the paint from the jar.

The paint is thinned to the consistancy of milk, not that it matters, I did say it did this when spraying THINNER.

When you say it comes out in bursts, do you mean thatr there are distinct stop-start bursts, or do you mean it comes out in little pulses, ie the paint doesn't stop completely, but it's just not a smooth continuous stream?

If it's the former, then it suggests that air is leaking into the paint path. As described above, this could be due to wear or damage to the needle bearing, or a leaky seal where the head assembly screws into the body (check that the head washer is present and undamaged).

If it's the latter, and it's just not delivering a smooth continuous flow and it sprays at a fairly constant rate in tiny little pulses, it's simply due to the nature of your compressor, which is a diaphragm based unit. If this is the case, there's nothing at all wrong with your airbrush. If you have any "air" left in your propel can, try that and see if it makes a difference.

Its not the compressor, I know it can spray a nice constant stream, it normally does it with thinner.  As for how its coming out, pucker your lips and blow out, then stick your tongue infront really quick a few times, thats how it comes out.

Im gona send it to be repaired, I dunno how to check that bearing.

anyone know anything about it?

Banged Head [banghead]

Phil_H,

Steven got a Badger 180-11 Cyclone2 compressor. It is old and very low powered, but could work ok if Steven figures out how to connect the airbrush and compressor correctly using the right airhost. I believe he may have found the right airbrush for what he wants to do, covering large areas. The Testors external mix airbrush with propellent can will be simple to use and maintain.

Did you understand how the paint comes out from his Badger 200 AB yet? Big Smile [:D]

Yes, I recall the infamous connector discussion. Big Smile [:D]

Steven,

Before you send your airbrush back to Badger, I have one more thing for you to check. The stem of the paint jar must form an airtight seal where it plugs into the collar on the airbrush body.  If the stem is metal, if there are any scratches or gouges on its surface, these may cause air leaks. If it is plastic, check to see that it isn't cracked, or split. Also check if there is any dried paint on it (or on the inner surface of the collar) which may prevent it making a snug seal. The stem should slide in about 4-5mm and seal tightly. If it is at all loose, it will not seal correctly and may leak air into the paint path, causing sputtering.

I normally clean that often, but Ill give it another go over to see if everything is on the up and up, lay a bit of plastic cement over anything that could be a gap just incase, eh'

Tried it, that didnt help, I cleaned both till they were shining and smooth

Keilau, honestly, if you were to talk to me like that face to face, I'd hit you, please shut up

Why do you think that I have been backing Badger all these years so much?

Yes they do have that kind of service and Ken will take care of you if you need to send it back.

Taped Shut [XX] Not by a long shot. Particularly in the shadow of the great MikeV. Smile [:)]

Just my humble opinion from common sense, particularly about cheap compressors.
