Black Wash

I have a USS Enterpirse 1701-A. I have applied the base coat and most of the assembly. What I would like to do is use a thinned black to go over the model to darken the recessed groves in the model to give it the "realistic look". I tried this and went to wipe off the excess and smeared the base coat. What is the best way to do this??

What kind of paint are you using for your wash? Arcylic or enamel? Did you put down a clear coat to seal the underlying paint?

It may sound stupid, but have you tried watercolors? Won't damage the surface and if you mess up a damp rag or q-tip will clean it up for you.
