Gloss paints for Figures base coat?

I have read Mark Bannermans articles and am trying to paint a 1/16 scale figure the way he says but I have a question. He states that he uses Gloss when he mixes his Base coat, 20% Dark Yellow, 20% White, 30% Alcohol and 30% Gloss. What gloss are we talking about, I am really confused. He says its Tamiya paints but all thier gloss paints are colored ones? Is it a clear gloss or what. Please help out an ignorant painter here:-)
