Which paint to use!?
Posted by Ripcord on Monday, April 26, 2010 8:11 PM

I have been wanting to build my first...lets say,   do it right model(s) which are sitting in the garage.  I have not built one since I was a kid.  Anyhow I have an airbrush and such and was wondering which paint I should use an in I would like to use acrylics.  I like that fact the they clean in water, which may save my airbrush yet.  The side of the model box says to use Model Masters from testors.  Any one had luck with testors paints?  It says materials required but Im still gonna take that as a recommendation.  Thanks for any post I may recieve ahead of time.  Big Smile

Also what is a decent place to get paint from.  I look at airbrush-depot.com but it seems they only carry sets.  Right now I usually order from tower hobbies,  but Im starting to not like that site.   And the pic of the CEO on the front cover of the catalog is UGLY.  lol  Sorry.  Thanks in advance!

I've always thought that whatever the LHS carried is the best choice. That way you don't run out and have to order and wait.

Vallejo are highly ranked by those who use them. I can't find them locally and haven't tried them, so it's hearsay. but I hear they airbrush decently and brush paint well.

Testors Acryl (or as one person calls them "ACKryl") aren't so great at airbrushing, but are pretty good at brush painting.

I haven't heard anything good about modern Humbrol Acrylic paints.

Tamiya and Gunze Sangyo airbrush perfectly, but aren't so great for brush painting.

I use Tamiya exclusively and have learned to brush paint them, which basically is don't try to put on a second coat the same day.

So long folks!

Hi Ripcord. I too am in the same boat as you. I am rounding up supplies to start modeling again. After doing some reading up on things, mostly on the site. I have decide, because you have to start somewhere, to use Testors Model Masters Acrylics (mostly)

The people here will chime in, I'm sure. But as a beginner at wanting to do better, then that kid, 30 years ago. (OMG). I'm going to start with these a hopefully get profitiant with them, then branch out from there. I too, purchased an airbrush. I found that Testors has a toll free line to call and ask questions on.

One thing I learned from them is that it is ok to use enamels with acrylics. As long as you apply the enamels first and let them dry completely before appling the acrylics. This might be needed if you can't find a color you need in acrylic.....

There does seem to be a lot to learn about wanting to do the best job possible. have fun.

Testors Model Master Acryl would be a good place to start since they are already thinned and are airbrush ready out of the bottle, and they also clean up easily.  After you get the hang of it then you may want to switch to other paint or just stick with what you got.  I know alot of people use Tamiya acrylics.  I myself prefer enamels since acrylics are effected by even the smallest amount of oils or other residue on plastic.  It's your call

Thanks for the responses!  It good to see others in the same boat.  I didnt know that about enamels and acrylics which is good cause this model uses both and I was sure to screw that up.  Shipping is more than the paint!  I may check the LHS but they usually dont carry much but 99 cent spray paint.....yea.....small town.  Anyhow,  Thanks for the responses!

We did? i also found this place that the paint was cheaper at. http://www.scalehobbyist.com/ You need to get all the things you need at once to make it worth while to spend the freight monies. Maybe get the thing needed for the next project.
