Afrika Korps Paint?
Posted by Alex Shaw on Monday, May 10, 2010 1:25 PM

I just brought a Tamiya 1/35 Panzer Kampfwagen II, but I don't know what colours to use to paint it in a Afrika Korps scheme. Can anyone make some suggestions?

It depends on what period of the African campaign you plat to depict. 5th Light and 15th Panzer first deployed to Africa in early 1941 with their tanks in the standard Dark Gray. Crews soon then added a concoction of mud to better blend them in with the local terrain. Later in 1941 a new color was authorized for use, Yellow Brown. In 1942 a new color Brown was used, along with a second color Green Brown for pattern painting. At the very end of the campaign in early 1943, some equipment did arrive in theater that were in the new Dark Yellow color. Testors has all these colors in their Model Master II line up.

As stickpusher suggested, the Model master line has several shades, including Afrika Braun. After the North African sun and the elements got to the paint, the colors were completely off from vehicle to vehicle. The DAK also used captured British and Italian paints to supplement their stocks. Even the German paints had some variation from thinning and application methods.
