Some of the answer depends on which acrylic paint you are using. When I use vallejo or other water-based acrylics for washing, which I do way more often than an oil wash, I use water and mixing medium. It's a product from Privateer Press' P3 line.

Although I have had excellent results using equal parts water and Golden's Acrylic Flow release as well.
My painting experience is much more figurines and gaming than historical models. I played alot of warhammer 40k, etc, so acrylic washes on multiple models was a big part of my tool kit.

What you use to reduce, or thin, an acrylic paint to make a wash should be the same solvent you use for airbrushing. Usually, this is water or isopropyl alcohol for most of the major brands. A drop of dispersant, such as detergent, liquid soap, or a retarder or flow-aid is generally a good idea.
