Help! I'm stuck (literally!)
Posted by sub revolution on Friday, July 9, 2010 8:44 PM

So I went to use my airbrush tonight, and while the needle and everything move freely, no air comes out! Just from looking at it, it looks like the air valve (?) might be stuck. I've never even heard of this being an issue. Anyone ever have this happen before?

Could be a bad air valve, or possibly it's just got some dried paint that got in there where the trigger contacts it. Take it apart and look at it, if you haven't already.

The usual reason for an air valve to stick is contamination.  You'll probably have to take it apart  and clean it.  If you do, be careful not to lose any of the really tiny parts.  There is most likely a little rubber O-ring.  If you got lacquer thinner on it, it can swell and stick.  Just let it dry out a couple of days.  If there is paint in the valve assembly, you probably have a leaky needle bearing or else you pulled the needle while there was paint in the cup.  Some people put airbrush lube on the valve parts.  I don't, but it couldn't hurt.  You might get more specific help if you mention which airbrush you have.

Heh, yep been there and done all that myself. Ditto on the lube...I put a drop on the end of the trigger that goes into the valve, and I seem to recall someone at Coast Airbrush telling me that you don't want to directly apply lube to the valve assembly. I lacquered up an o-ring once, but I didn't know that it would eventually shrink back to normal size. I replaced mine, and at $6 plus shipping for a tiny o-ring that was kind of an expensive lesson.
