painting black plasctic
Posted by snappytools1 on Monday, July 12, 2010 1:41 PM

Hey guys my sone is working on a model that is molded black and red. The frame is black and we want to paint it yellow, and the body is red but want it blue. after a light coat on the frame it is an olive color. my question is will enuff coats of yellow get us where we want or should i paint all of it white first. Will the blue go over the red?  I am using tamayia acrylics for the job. Thanks in advance

I would suggest that an overall coat of light grey, or even white primer should help, especially considering you are going to be finishing in yellow (it won't offer the best coverage).

i agree a light grey or even white primer to start but put on the primer in very thin coats leaving to dry between each coats that way you can build up a good light surface to paint on. is the yellow paint high gloss or matt?

Now is a good time to get him used to priming.  Even if the color you want to paint matches the plastic color well, primer has other attributes, so many of us prime everything we paint.

One reason is that one can see imperfections and sink marks easier in primer than in the "sort of translucent" surface of styrene.  Another is that a good prime will accept various types of paint easier than unprimed styrene.
