To build or paint, that is the question...

Hey guys, so I've never tried painting the major portions of a model prior to assembling it, but I know some people swear by doing it that way. I'm considering trying it on my current project (1:48 A-10) and was wondering what some pros and cons of this method are. Thoughts, anyone?

I used to do it this way but found i spent more time touching up than actually painting. now i build then paint.
