Weird Future Reaction
Posted by plasticjunkie on Thursday, August 19, 2010 8:02 AM
I was working on my Kawanishi George and getting it ready for paint and weathering. I shot the entire plane with Tamiya Flat Acrylic Aluminum with my AB. I then shot MM Japanese Navy Green enamel over the top areas, leaving the nm finish on the undersides. Next day I used a sharp toothpick to chip the green paint. It came out looking fantastic. About 3-4 days later, I sprayed some Future thinned just a tad with rubbing alcohol over the entire plane in preparations for decaling and washes. A couple of hours later, I noticed that the Future had clouded and hazed only around the chipped areas, but the rest of the plane was glossy and smooth.
I thought about taking some ammonia and carefully stripping the Future off on the top area, but first I carefully experimented by using one of my fine polishing sticks on a couple of hazed spots, removing some haze. I then used some MM flat and brushed it on the poished hazed spots. To my surprise, the haze was almost completely gone! It actually adds weathering tone and color variation to the paint by breaking up the solid green with slightlty faded areas. This is the first time I experienced any such reaction when using Future. It was a very humid day so maybe this was a factor? Is this what you call "blooming"?

Blooming, if that was what had happened would possibly not be apparent only on the chipped areas - I would think it would be more random than you describe.

It sounds more like a reaction to the underlying Tamiya acrylic area, or a reaction to the green enamel on the chipped edges. Maybe the enamel still had a bit of curing to do underneath the top skin & chipping made this more obvious?

Just a though.

And more widespread.

I'd say it's possible that the Future coat has had some leaching effect on the exposed Tamiya acrylic. .Future will dissolve (or partially dissolve) Tamiya acrylic if applied wet enough. Also, how long did you leave the aluminium acrylic to dry before overcoating with your green enamel?

I let the Tamiya Acrylic sit for about a good day , then sprayed the MM enamel on the top of the Tamiya acrylic on top of the wings and the fuse sides. I left that sit for at leats 3 days or even 4 since I was repainting my son's bedroom. The haze manifested only on the chipped areas when the Future dried. The rest of the plane is smooth as glass, including the undersides sprayed with Future over Tamiya acrylic anuminum.

Interesting that you had that reaction...even though I love the stuff I have had some odd things happen while using Future.

What kind of weird reactions have you experienced with this stuff?

I've had it haze, I 've had it peel, I've had the blossom stuff, I've had reactions with various paints, decal setting agents, liquid masks. I guess I am impaitent and don't let it set sometimes, but I still keep coming back to it.

I had Future turn the decals on my F-102 yellow when I tried using it as an overcoat a few years back.  The decals looked perfect (and perfectly clear) before and after laying them down on a Future undercoat, and I should have just left well enough alone, but I decided I would seal the decals with another coat of Future.  They yellowed virtually before my eyes as I sprayed Future over them---- and stayed that way.  It was my best executed model up to that point, and the Future effect was so traumatic that I have never since gone Back to the Future.  I'll take Tamiya, Gunze, or any number of other acrylic clear coats anytime..... and spend the additional money gladly.  Future---- YUCK!

I guess we all have a horror story to tell sooner or later. I got bold this morning and brushed on some Future on the aircraft. As of this evening the plane looks great. Maybe it was the alcohol or humidity or a combo of both? First time I have brushed the stuff and it looks like its been airbrushed.
