So I am new here and I am sure some one else has had the same question.  When a color is named Matte Light gray is this really Flat Light Gray?  What about Silky Matte?  This semi- Gloss????

I would say yes to both although I am not familiar with the term, "silky matte"

When applied to hobby paints it may be different but I once worked in the paint department of a hardware store and it seems to me matte was flat, and silky matte was kind of a satin finish, no shine like a gloss but not quite flat. Picture an eggshell, its not shiny but its not really flat either.

I agree Aaron.

I have always interpreted matt as flat.  Terms for semi-matt include eggshell and satin.

That being said, it is possible to make a semi-matt finish from flats by putting it on very thick/wet. One can get a semi-matt finish with gloss paint, on the other hand, by putting it down dry, with several very light, dry coats.

BTW, for a black, Testors MM Black Chrome is a nice semi-matt.

Thanks everyone.  These were my assumptions as well but wanted to ask to be sure.
