Washing with Terpenoid gone bad..need help!

OK so I got to the weathering stage of my latest build, an F-4J Phantom II, and thought this would be a great time to try Terpenoid for the wash since I have heard so much about it. I go to the local art supply store and buy the smallest can of Terpenoid Natural. I get home, mix the stuff with some oil paints like I have done before with regular paint thinner and was shocked when the applied wash became sticky and hard to remove.

After investigation I found out that there are 2 typs of Terpenoid. Terpenoid Natural in a Green lable which is not made for washes, and regular Terpenoid in a Blue lable. Oh well. lesson learned.

However, since it was too late for the Phantom, I decide to finish applying the wash and have the plane be dirtier than I planned. But here in lies the problem. After a week since I applied the wash some of the surfaces on the model are still tacky. Can I go ahead and put a coat of flat clear to finish off the model or will I have to wait, who knows how long, for the wash to completely dry?

Since that art supply store does not carry the blue lable Terpenoid I bought a small bottle of Odorless Taltine by Demco. The downside is that Taltine is still toxic and requires a well ventilated area. A problem since I have no windows in my new workshop, just an exhaust for my paint booth. Does anyone know an alternative non-toxic thinner for washes?

Thanks, Denis

Hi Denis,

If you are using oil paint based washes, unfortunatly there's not really any truly non-toxic medium available as a thinner. You can get odourless thinners, but these will still be petroleum based and still give off noxious vapours - you just can't smell them. Adequate ventilation and breathing protection are still required.

Thanks Phil,

I'll keep that in mind and have my paint booth fan on when using the stuff.

Can you or anyone else tell me if I  can put some Clear Flat on the model while it is still tacky from the wash? Or should I wait longer for it to dry out?

For best results, I'd wait. But experiment on a piece of scrap plastic, and you can get different effects.

I thought about spraying some future mixed with tamiya flat base on the tail surfaces to test how it will react. If the elevators get messed up they are easy to remove and strip, etc...

Gemini Masterpiece is an odorless thinner... I think I bought it at Hobby Lobby, but you could look on the web to see who carries it in Canada...  Works ok so far, although I prefer the stinky stuff...  I like thinners and solvents to smell like thinners and solvents... Don't care about ventilation, since the windows work in the War Room...

Have you ever considered doing washes with Tempera paints?  I'm starting to like the stuff...  Especially being able to wipe it off with a damp cloth even after it's dry..
