Only air from Airbrush nozzle but no paint.
Posted by Casper the Chihuahua on Friday, October 15, 2010 8:40 PM

Hi Everyone,

I have come back to scale modelling after about 30 years.  I have just purchased a new Delta double action airbrush/compressor set and am having a few set up issues.  The compressor works great and I have regulated air at about 25psi.  Air comes through the air brush nozzle but when I have put a 50%/50% enamel thinners solution in the cup I get no paint but plenty of air flowing through.  I cannot even get water to come out of the cup.

Any help/suggestion sowul be most welcome.

Not very familiar with Delta airbrushes, but a quick search revealed that they've got all the major feed types covered. Is yours siphon feed, side feed, or gravity feed?

Did you try water before paint? If you tried the paint first, then tried the water, the problem could be paint clogged up in the nozzle.

Also can you gurgle it? If you're not familiar with it, pull the trigger back about halfway so you don't damage the needle, cover the nozzle with your finger or a folded up paper towel or something and then press the trigger down. This should force the air back into the cup and cause any contents within to bubble and gurgle. If not, you've got a blockage somewhere in the paint channel.

Safe bet is probably to strip it, clean the heck out of it, and put it back together again.

I don't mean to insult you, but does the needle move when you pull back on the trigger?  Some people forget to tighten the  needle chuck.  Other than that, it sounds like a blockage somewhere, likely in the nozzle.

Hi Don,

I think I checked the needle about the same time you replied.  I must have tightened it when I was checking out the mechanism yesterday when I got it home.  I now need a bit of practice but the paint and air are now flowing well.

Cheers

Scott
