Weathering
Posted by Alex Shaw on Thursday, October 21, 2010 3:21 PM

Hi, im getting a 1/72 Lancaster soon and im want to know how to weather it .For example, I've seen many model Lancaster with exhaust stain over the wings. It would be a great help if you could give me some tips!

If you have an airbrush that works well for exhaust stains.  Otherwise, dry brush the stains.  But.... If you have not done it before, practice first on scrap, for EITHER technique.

Washes are another weathering technique, but not good for exhaust stains.

Hello Alex,

Sounds like a fun project. First, what tools do you have to work with? Will you be using an airbrush? It would bring alot of life to your Lancaster if you can play with the base colors a bit. Try to stay away from all areas and all panels being exactly the same tone as other areas with the same color.

Pigments such as Mig Pigments or Vallejo work well for exhaust stains

Ditto. Be subtle, and it will look much better with this method than with an airbrush, IMO.
