Painting problems
Posted by Laurie on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 4:46 AM

Progressing on my first serious plastic model to 1:72 scale.

Come across a problem with one of the colours a Humbrol 106 enamel.

Using a Harder & Steinbeck Evolution air brush which after lots of practice I am able to use in a rudimentary fashion getting reasonable results. Two other colours I have airbrushed the wings fuselage with have, this being my first, have turned out OK. But the third as mentioned above has not.

The coats have turned out streaky & patchy. Sure this is not air brush problems as those colours I have applied successfully were applied before & after the problem one.

I have wet & dried & reapplied coats but no improvement. Used 2/1 & 1/1 mixes. Also used a brush in frustration but with the same results. Just to confirm that I have meticulously stirred the paint & finally before use mixed with a mechanical stirrer.

Thought did pass by as to if the paint was faulty. I have emailed Humbrol with the above to see what they have to say.

Very sad as I have taken a lot of trouble & patience (for me) over this small model to set down my techniques of construction. Can any body please help?

Matter of interest which enamel do you recommend. Are there those better than others or is it just finding one that suits your own technique.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums Laurie!

Agreed with the theory the bottle of paint is at fault. Some colors, batches or production runs are just duds.

I use rattle cans (gasp!) and found some colors (Testor's yellow anything) are not worth the fuss. I resorted to Krylon Sunbeam & Butter cream instead with excellent results!

Try that color you need in a different manufacture like Testors, Polly scale or Tamiya.

Thanks Jason for your welcome with your interest in my problem & to Mark for your interest.

I  thinned the Humbrol Paint (a division of Airfix models in the UK) with their own thinners. Very cold here, even in Jersey despite being surrounded by the realtivly warm sea, but the paint would always have been around 15 degrees.

Having written asking for advice it does concentrate the mind. The place I buy from has only a very small model section (Jersey only has 80,000,000 people) & wonder if this is old stock. Who knows but in future will buy from an on line merchant who will have a good turn over of stock.

May say as a starter I bought my first model from Airfix. Had the cockpit cover missing (may have been my carelessness & told them so) & requested a replacement. They say you may have to wait 28 days & they are not wrong. In frustration bought a replacement model so will not be Airfixing again.

To correct an over generous use of noughts. The figure is 80,000. Jersey is only 5 by 9 miles & we do not have a stacking system yet, working on it, for 80,000,000 humans.

Airfix is a company that has been recently revitalized with new molds and designs that are getting attention. You most likely bought a vintage kit or a re-release of one, the lesson here is you get what you pay for.

They have been known to be the only injected molded plastic model company to manufacture certain subjects in 1/24 scale. This has been changing as other manufactures have been releasing popular subjects in this scale, yet as a tribute in a way many AM manufactures produce details, motors, cockpits, PE & decals for Airfix 1/24 scale kits.

Bought the 1/24 scale Mosquito decal set for Canadian units, still waiting to get a chance to buy the Airfix 1/24 scale Mosquito!

All that being said 1/48 scale is easier to work with and won't cost to much. Look for a Tamiya or Dragon kit or two to get started without fit or other issues.

Yes bit hard on Airfix just my impatience.

Received a very nice note from their customer service man Mark six or so hours after my note so cannot complain there.

They are also sending a replacement which is very good of them although they say they do not know of a problem.

The amazing thing is that Airfix is part of the Hornby company. I used to play with the Hornby clockwork railways which if you now have the sets in the orginal boxes are now being auctioned for extreme amounts.
