Polly Scale Flat Clear - discontinued??
Posted by vaw1975 on Sunday, January 2, 2011 4:42 PM

I wanted to order some Polly Scale Flat for my armor project but it has been discontinued. I read somewhere that they're working on a new formula and should have it again in the future... In the meantime - what is a good alternative for a water-soluble Flat Clear for armor? How is ModelMaster Acryl Flat Clear for sealing Tamiya Acrylics?

Good. Polly flat nearly ruined my Dauntless project awhile back.

You may want to give Vallejo flat varnish a look see.

Don't know about how it seals Tamiya Acrylics, but I do use Model Master Acryl Flat to flat coat seal after Future applications over Tamiya Acrylics with no problems.  I run it through the airbrush using the Testor's branded Acrylic thinner and it goes on like a charm.

And I agree with Doogs on the old Poly Flat, that stuff was god awful.

Iv'e used both MM clear flat, gloss and semi-gloss with no probluems I use gloss for decaling and flat or semi gloss for a final finish.   I also use testors dull coat spray can works good also, iv'e used this over MM  paint  PolyS and Tamyia with no probluems.              ACESES5

Hey ACESES5, do you mean you used the MM "Acryl" over Tamiya? Or the regular MM? Thanks

I realize this is an older thread, but have to stand in defense of Polly Scale Clear Flat.  I've used it for years, both airbrushed and brushed. It was the only clear flat that was absolutely dead-flat when airbrushed using the correct thinner. Granted, Dullcoat is dead-flat too, but every model that has white or a light color that I used it on ended up yellowing over the years, including a few contract builds. Lacquer will do this and there is no way to avoid it.  I've been on hiatus due to health issues, but want to try Vallejo Model Air sometime. Armor modelers are having great results with Model Air and also the standard Vallejo colors - search articles for airbrushing techniques with Vallejo.  If anyone finds a pallet of Polly Scale and wants to split the cost, I'm in for a life-time supply.  Happy Modeling.  Ric
