Airbrush(paasche)/Compressor combo
Posted by Thivi on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 12:37 PM

I'm looking at buying a Paasche Talon airbrush, and I'm wondering if a 2-gallon compressor from Canadian Tire will work:

  • oil-free compressor

  • Running HP: 1/5, peak HP: 1/3

  • Max PSI: 100 @ 3900 RPM

  • Requires 2A, 120V

  • Delivers 1.0 scfm @ 40 PSI and 0.7 scfm @ 90 PSI

  • Includes 25' (7.6 m) recoil hose

Does this sound like it makes sense? The compressor was just on sale for $40 but I missed it, its not $100

If you can stand to have the brutal noise of a shop compressor within your work room, there's no reason it won't work. Others here will obviously suggest that you go for a dedicated hobby compressor, which is the route I went for myself.

I thought hobby compressors were somewhere from $200-$500. I don't have a ton of money.

Those tools compressor is no bargain unless you have a huge house and can put it in the far away garage.

Yes, the airbrush compressor will cost more, but it is well worth it. You can check this seller out who has office in Canada. (I have never deal with them. Just saw their internet site.) Tha Canadian have far less options than the US modelers.

Be careful about ordering from the USA. If the seller ships by UPS, you will have a substantial UPS brokage fee. Here is one experience by zokissima in Toronto.

I have the same compressor sold under another name.  It works great.  You can usually find it under the "Tool Shop" brand at Menards for between $55 and $59.  You may want to do what I did and replace the regulator and guage that comes with it with a unit that also has a moisture trap.  Or buy an inline moisture trap.

Thanks for the responses. Do you not find it as loud as others have said? I would think noise wouldn't be TOO bad, I won't be painting while my daughter sleeps so I'm sure if I'm tucked away in a room somewhere anyway, I could deal with it, especially with some headphones on. Is it worth buying?

I still have yet to paint my first model, I've built a few but because I haven't had an airbrush I haven't really delved into it too much. I tried a little bit of brush painting but wasn't too fond of it. I saw this compressor and thought that'd be the way to go.

In most cases, it is the family, not the modeler alone, will have to decide together. It is really funny if the whole family wear headphones and play their music when you model!! It does not work in 9 out of 10 families.

Bring your sprouse to the store and plug the compressor in and turn it on while you two talk over if the noise is ok. If the store will not allow it, make sure they accept return. Good luck.

I've been looking on ebay at some Talon/Compressor combos so I think that might be the route I go. Thanks for the response!
