Which Compressor?
Posted by FalconAbove on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 8:59 PM

I have been running a single action aztek airbrush with air cans for a while, with okay results. I have been modelling for about 3 years, and i have decided to make the step up to a real airbrush and compressor. For the airbrush, I purchased a Badger 105, because of the great reveiws it got and such. I am now in the market for a compressor. I have $200 put away for one, but with so many choices I cant seem to make up my mindConfused I'm not completely an idiot when it comes to knowing what you need for one. A garage type compressor is out of the question, just too loud for my house. So here are the ones i think would work, but again i have no clue...

The Sparmax TC2000 has got great reveiws, quiet, keeps pressure, but i have heard problems with water trap?

The TCP Global TC-196, it has a tank, is only 59 db, and at 169 for a twin piston with a tank, it seems like a deal!

Both of these have a high pressure max, which i have heard is a plus! But, with having a gravity feed airbrush, do i need the power of a twin piston?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have 3 air compressors so hopefully i can give you some comments. I have a tiger shark silent compressor, a Iwata Power jet 900, and an older version of Passche 1/10 hp blue compressor. Of course the tiger shark is the most quiet, like the fridge but expensive.

I think the Iwata sprint jet compressor is pretty quiet. it should be something similiar with my power jet that I use most of the time. And do not get anything from Passche (including airbrush). the Passche compressor/airbrush was the first set I got,  and its loud like a lawn mower. Perhaps the newer Passche are better but I doubt it because my Passche vl airbrush is a very old design and probably one of the crappiest airbrush out there and still in production.

the thing is the sprint jet has no tank, so in a long run if you stick with the hobby, you should invest in something with bigger tank, even my power jet with 3.5 L tank is a bit too small for me.

google chicago airbrush, (not sure if they are the cheapest) check out the compressor section and a lot (not all, passche didnt tell theirs, probably too embarrass to mention) of the models tells you how loud they are in db. for example the power jet is about 55db, the spirnt jet is 50db, the blue passche is probably 120db IMO. hope this help.
