Tire Paint

Believe it or not, I use M/M Gunmetal #1795.  It's not as starkly dark like flat black and it's bluish hue seems more realistic to me.

I make my own tire black by putting about 20% flat white to flat black and add a few drops of flat military brown. Maybe next batch, I might try flat dark tan instead of the brown just as an experiment.

Thanks all for your knowledge and information.  The medium I work with is mainly acrylic base.  One major reason is clean up and ease of use with airbrushing.  I will look into the suggestions given above, i just dont like the real dark looking black for tires, then you have a weathered or dusted model.

The best tire color I have used is by Testors in the small bottle called "1183 Rubber". This enamel brushes on smooth and even , leaving no brush marks. It's kind of black but with a brownish tint to it.

I think fullmetal originally meant H77 Tire black from Gunze. But the thing is, almost every dark grey colour looks better on tires than straight black. A little drybrushing with earth color and you're set. I most often recommend Humbrol 32 for the enamel fans. But as Don said, mixing your own colour also seems a logical solution. Like don't waste time shopping, when you can build something! Have a nice day

As others say, there are a number of good grimy blacks out there. If you are caught without one, mix up your own in a little plastic cup.  Put some black in there, then add a drop or two of light grey.  Sometimes a drop of tan gives a slightly different shade.  One advantage of making your own is that the tires do not all end up looking the same from model to model.

Hello

I have been looking for a good paint to use for tire color in military modeling.  At one time in the past I saw or found a bottle of paint dont remember name, enamel or acrylic or manufactuer.  Maybe some one on here can help.  I do remember it was called something like German Rubber or tire rubbber. 

Anyone help would be great and hopefully some one can give me the details on where to buy also.

I've been using Floquil Grimy Black, and then dry brush a light gray on the tread to simulate wear. It can be had at multiple online retailers, try googling it for sources.

Depends on the tires you're painting, too. 

My typical go-to is Vallejo Black Grey, but I've got pictures of Bf 109 tires that show a distinct brownish tinge in them, so for the 109E I'm working on right now, I mixed in a bit of Leather Brown (think I should've mixed a bit more in, since it barely showed up!)

Depends on the medium you're looking for.

Acrylics, there's Floquil (Poly Scale) and they have a ton of blackish colors (mainly since they cover railroad paints).  I use either Engine Black or Grimy Black.  I think Testors (Model Master) or Gunze used to have a "Tire Black" but I can't remember if it was enamel or acrylic.  Depending on the application, after it get dusted with dirt/mud/etc, the base color isn't going to be much more than a starting point anyways.

"NATO Black" from Tamiya has a weird "greenish black" tint to it so I tend to stay away from it.
