Two painting problems
Posted by Powder Monkey on Saturday, February 12, 2011 2:13 PM

I am building the Revell Mini Cooper and have two problems.

1. I painted the body with Model Master paint in a rattle can. I put on a clear coat of Model Master Clear Lacquer Overcoat. When I went to mask the body with Tamiya masking tape, I noticed the tape pulled off the clear coat. I covered the whole model with tape and have pulled off every spec of clear. What happened? I tried to find enamel clear but everything in the hobby shop was lacquer.

2.The windows are molded in one piece and require masking and painting with black paint. I masked with Tamiya tape and brushed on Future to seal the edges. I then sprayed with Krylon semigloss black. When I peeled off the tape, the clear areas were etched. Could the solvents have leaked through the tape? I used the same black on other parts with no problem. Does clear plastic act differently than the white?

I would appreciate any help. Thanks,

Pete

1. Sounds like you did not wait long enough for the clear to dry. i would wait longer to mask. Testor/MM enamel will get yellow over time, especially disasterous over white paint. Since you are using lacquer, i guess you dont mind using clear nail polish, much harder, dry faster, never peel, but might get brittle sometimes.

2. Krylon is very hot even it said acrylic on the label, I looked at the MSDS and I saw all kinds of nasty stuff in there, so i am not surprise it will disolve your future seal and sip under the tape. I would spray very very thin coat to build up the color. I have no problem with Krylon clear on decals on few occasion.
