Masking MM Silver
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 8:20 PM
I need some help with masking of Model Masters silver. I'm working on a B-36 1/72 scale and have already painted the wings with the coat of Silver and now nead to mast off the silver for a coat of MM Metalizer Aluminum. I have tried different tape masks and also tried a flat clear coat which only dulled the finish. My problem is when masking the silver the tape pulls up the luster (not the paint) and leaves a dull spot whereever the tape is in contact with the paint. Does any one have a ny suggestions?

Would something with less tack work such as the low-tack masking tapes that 3M sells for car painters? I believe that is the blue tape. Confused [%-)]

You might also try 3M 2070 available at Home Depot. It is for "extremely delicate" surfaces and has about the tack of a Post-It note. I've never tried it though, so try it on a scrap first!
