whats wrong with the paint?
Posted by Antony Wright on Friday, March 4, 2011 10:07 AM

The paint Im having the problem is started its life in an aerosol can which I had decanted into bottles to use with my airbrush.

Ok i used my airbrush a few days ago using acrylics with no problems. Cleaned it out, and ran a couple of bottle of plain water through it. Again no problem. Today I filed the bottle with the paint from the aerosol. I could not see any problem with it. I assume that since it was already thinned for the aerosol it would not need to be thinned for the airbrush. However it just point blank refused to spray. I cleaned out everything I could, the nozel etc, air flow was good but it still would not spray. So I returned it to its original bottle and cleaned up the airbrush. Sprayed out a couple of bottles of water and hey presto it worked fine. So I grabbed a bottle of Revell - thinned it to what I wanted and sprayed that. Again no problems.

So back to my question. What is wrong with the paint that will not spray?

I want to say nothing is wrong with the paint. It is thin enough after decanting to spray through an airbrush. Maybe after that last cleaning you removed the problem. You dont say if you tryed the decanted paint again after the bottle of Revell. Did you let the paint degass for a couple hours.

It's hard to say what is wrong with the paint, if anything, from what you posted. I just wanted to throw out there though that when I want to decant paint for the airbrush I only take what I need for that session. I wouldn't decant a whole spray can and then store then paint.

ok to try to answer both of you. First off I haven't tried it after using the revell paint so I should try it again. Second What I decanted was what was left in the rattle can after having ran it our. I tend to puncture the cans before throwing them away and this paint is what came out at that time. It has been stored for several months but I did make sure it was thoroughly mixed before use. Its consistency was not much differnt to water and was certainly thinner than the Revell paint I used afterwards.

It is possible that the decanted paint thickened up while sitting inn the bottles you put them in.  That can happen after a while,  Give it a stir and make sure it has the consistency of milk.  Any thicker, put some airbrush thinner in it to get it back to the right viscosity.

Thanks. I have to undercoat a couple of items in the next couple of days so I shall give it another go then.
