Paint Brush Marks
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 8:54 PM
Hi, I'm new here, though i've been snooping around the forum for about a week now. I've finally got back to modeling now that i'm in college and anyway from my scrutinous eye of my mom, whom didn't like me making models in the house.

Anyways I've just started doing modeling and painting again. I didn't want to invest in an airbrush just yet so i'm painting w/ arylics on a paint brush. But when i paint , i get these brush marks if you look at it up close. Is there anyway to prevent that or minimize that effect?

Thx!

There are a few methods:

Put down thinner coats of paint, and vary the brushstroke direction between coats.
Don't try to cover the model in one coat, this will also often obliberate small details.

Add a "retarder" to the thinner, prior to thinning the paint. This will slow down the drying time of the paint, produce a more glossy(smooth finish) and also help prevent brushstrokes.

Use high-quality(Artist) brushes, preferably Sable or similar. Hate Nylon brushes myself.

Don't put too much paint onto your brushes.

Guess that is all that I think of the top of my head.

Forgot overlap your brush strokes, don' place them next to each other but overlap them a bit.

In the column to the left look at the "Browse By Subject" section, and click "Techniques". There is an article there entitled "Basics of Brush Painting" by Jeff Wilson in PDF format. I didn't read the entire thing but there are some interesting techniques in it that might help.

Edit ...
Actually the title as listed in the contents is "Great finishes - with a brush!". Sorry!
