Another question on Model air paints from a newbie
Posted by Josy11 on Friday, April 8, 2011 1:13 PM

Hi All,

Several of you have been most kind in helping me with my questions so far in this forum as I begin my modeling career, and I have continued to paint my first model (Revel Me -410 ). I bought the model air RLM sets and wanted to paint my 410 with the somewhat common RLM 76 on the bottom and then the combo of 74 and 75 on the top. My box art and my memory of this plane were that the RLM 75 was a light grey somewhat looking like a modern fighter jet grey and the 74 was a darker grey. I was quite surprised at how dark the RLM 75 color is. I was trying to figure out which one to spray first, and wanted to spray the lighter one, but I could not find a light one here. I looked on the web site and even looked at the brochure they sent with my paints and the images match the paint more than my recollection of the light grey - Do I need to account for sale effect of the paint to lighten it up? - it just appears to be way to dark for me and I am afraid that when I paint the RLM 74 on top, I will have a very dark 2 color camo - which I do not believe is correct.  - Am I just wrong in my memory here? - do I need to add some flat white or something to account for I am painting a 1/48 scale?

Thanks!

OK

After examining the Model Air brochure for a while I think they made an error. They say # 54 should be Graugrun which is Grey-Green. But when looking at the color chart it shows # 54 is Dark Grey Blue while number 55 which is next is listed as Grey-Green. I have number 52 which is German Grey on my Tamiya
SdKfz 222 right now and it does not look Grey Violet to me.

So to make a long story short I would go with:

Model Air #54 for your Gruaviolett

Model Air #55 for your Gruagrun

Model Air #46 for your Lichtblau (This one seems right to me.)

All of this advice is with the caveat that the best way to figure this out is buy the different colors and try them. It isn't cheap but anything you don't use you probably will later.

Hope this helps......

Scott
