Questions about Model Masters enamels
Posted by TankBusters on Thursday, April 14, 2011 12:15 PM

Hi all, newbie to FSM here. I am a bit perplexed about something that came up a while ago in my model building. I use Model Masters enamels exclusively in airbrushing my builds, I recently bought a 1/35 Academy Tiger 1 Early production. It is very detailed and I have a question on one of the internal paint schemes. The Drive train, Motor to transmission call for "metalic gray" ( I may have this wrong, but, I don't have the model close at hand.) Is this the same as "steel"? I want this build to be as right on as I can, does anyone know what might be the correct paint from the Model Master line? One more question, What is the "Metalizer" that MM puts out? Is this a type of paint or an additive for paints??? As you can see, I'm a babe in the woods when painting detail work at this time, be patient with me I'm fragile!!! LOL

Not sure about the metallic gray (Eduard refers to what I think is the same color as "dark iron"). It's definitely not steel though. If it were me and I were just winging it, I'd mix a dark gray with Aluminum and call it a day.

As for the metalizers, they're a specific blend of paint designed to replicate natural metal finishes. They're airbrush only (though I've been known to brush them and they're awesome for very subtle drybrushing). Some are buffing, and can be buffed to a very high shine. Others are non-buffing, and can't.

Metalizers look pretty great, but they're great weakness is that they aren't very durable at all and don't like being masked over.
