Artists oils question
Posted by TankBusters on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 10:20 AM

I'm trying to evolve as a model builder and you guys are a source of golden info for me, soooooo, I am heading out very soon to a local ( 20 miles) art supply store in Raleigh and I want to know what I should get as far as oils and thinner for doing washes and dot filters. I use ModelMasters enamels exclusively and I don't know what to get for these tricks. I hope that I haven't over simplified this too much...

Windsor and Newton seem to work well and they are readily available.

W&N paints are what I use and I have no complaints. They also seem to have the largest selection of colors.

Strangely, I've found "Transparent White" to be a nice little weapon to add to the arsenal for subtle streaking and fading effects.

For thinner - Mona Lisa Odorless Thinner. The stuff is so mild you can put it on top of unsealed MM enamels (once they're dry, of course), scrub it around with a brush, and it doesn't phase the enamels beneath. Also flows exceptionally well.

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

I also use W&N oil paints. Readily available, and a huge range of colours. Pretty affordable. One tube will go a long long long way.

As for thinning, I use mineral spirits, but I am not so sure that is a good idea on top of enamel paints. I base my models with acrylics, so for me its fine.
