Ok guys, thanks for the help.

I was able to pick up some X22 clear and MM flat clear acrylic.

Quesion now, do I thin the clears to spray.

Sorry, I am still very new to air brushing and I have not figured out my formula's yet.

Thanks!

 Don Stauffer:

For an airbrush-applied semi-gloss I have used clear polyurethane varnish.  There are several brands that offer semi-gloss or eggshell.

Don, do you mean hardware store polyurethane varnish?

Yep- exactly!  Thin it down and it works fine.  Worried about it yellowing, but so far oldest model I tried it on is about ten years old and no yellowing yet,

For an airbrush-applied semi-gloss I have used clear polyurethane varnish.  There are several brands that offer semi-gloss or eggshell.  It has to be thinned quite a bit, but so do most bottled hobby paints.  Polyurethane is compatible with most finishes and decals.  I use it as a last coat- I have never tried to put something over it.

Great, thanks!  I'll check out what is available to me at the shops!

I'll for sure post pics when she is done. It's my first model in over 10 years so there are a lot of little mistakes and my frist time trying to work with PE parts, but over all, I am very pleased.

Thanks for the help.

John, you should be ok with an acrylic gloss over lacquer. Always best to test first however.

Good luck with it

Be sure to post some pictures............

I thought about decanting.  I've never tried that but I guess now is a good time to learn. Smile

Not yet, I like to be armed with some info and know a little but about what I am looking for before I head to a store. I'll be heading over to my LSH and the the store I bought my AB.  The AB store stocks Tamiya paints including the X-22 clear, but I am un sure of the gloss on that.

My LHS has Tamiya and MM, but I don't think they carry Valero.  I just don't know if anything will react with the clear lacquer all ready applied.

Thanks!

You could decant the clear you already have into an empty bottle, let it degas for a bit then run it through your airbrush which will give you better control and overall finish.

Have you looked at your local craft store for clear coats?

Clear Coat Questions

Can someone recomend a brand of semi gloss clear that I can air brush over Testor Semi Gloss laquer?

I am building a 1/48 F4U-1D that has been painted with Tamiya AS-8.

Before I bought my air brush, my LHS (a good one that I trust) said it was ok to use Testor's Semi Gloss laquier rattle can.  I sprayed a light coat of the laquer before decalling and everything is going ok, but when I do my final coat, I would like to use the air brush as the rattle can clear laquer was pretty tough to control when sprayed.

What are my options?  Am I pretty much stuck with finishing with the Testor laquer or is there an acrylic semi gloss that I can use?

I am using a semi gloss on my F4 as it is the solod blue color, not the gray blue paint sceme of the eariler models.

Thanks!

John
