As long as the underlying paint is properly cured before overpainting, no, it shouldn't dry anything other than flat if it has been thoroughly mixed before painting.

I appreciate all the help. Would painting flat over a polished aluminum base change a flat color to something other than flat?

Flat over gloss works better than gloss over flat. If you try later technique, you may end up with a semi-gloss.  The flat needs to be sanded with a fine paper like 1000 grit. On the other hand, going flat over gloss may not need sanding at all if the surface is good and clean.

Just wondered how the Olive Drab would look over the glossy black primer. Thanks in advance!

It will look flat just as it usually would. The gloss finish won't give you any problems (flat's paint fine over glossy, sanded plastic), but the black may give the olive drab a darker cast than you might expect - an extra coat of olive drab will cure this if required.

First,, welcome to the forums csquare...  glad to have you aboard

In answer - you should be fine painting flat over the aluminum (don't do any buffing or anything to the metal finish beforehand).

I've used flats over metal a number of times and have not had any issues. When in doubt always test first. Here is a photo where you can see a few flats painted over an SNJ metal finish.

Good luck with the build and be sure to post some photos!

Flat paint over gloss paint

Hello all....this is my first time on the forum so be kind to my first post. My question is can I airbrush a flat color over a glossy color and still obtain a flat color? I'm using Alclad and I have to have a glossy black primer (which I do) before I can paint the polished aluminum. In mid-build I'm thinking about changing the B-17 I was originally going to build (Bit O Lace) to another (Little Miss Mischief) which has a part aluminum finish and an olive drab finish. Just wondered how the Olive Drab would look over the glossy black primer. Thanks in advance!
