Masking bulged wheels?
Posted by DoogsATX on Monday, August 8, 2011 11:24 AM

Hey all. So I know the circle template trick for painting armor wheels and such...but I need to paint the hubs of my Spitfire WIP's wheels, and the problems are twofold. First...very faint transition from hub to tire. Second, the tires bulge out, and the hubs are somewhat inset, so I don't see how the circle template could keep a hard edge in this application.

Anybody got any ideas?

I saw somebody in one of the threads had a plastic cone trick, where they gone would cover the hub so the tire could be painted...but how on earth to get it to match the hub diameter?

Go to the office supply store of your choosing and buy some of that printer paper that has a peel and stick back. Cut to shape, stick, and paint. Some of that stuff isn't the most sticky, but on a wheel hub it should work if you don't go too nuts.

Better yet, raid the supply closet at work and appropriate a couple of those "hello my name is" sticker nametag thingies. That should have the same effect and not cost anything.

Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?

Wasn't there a reader tip this month, something to do with cake batter?? (No, I'm serious!!) put a little drip in the middle of your hub, it'll slowly spread until it fills the area, let it dry, paint it, remove after paint is dry?? Liquid masking would work too, but I'm thinking it may actually be more difficult to remove than the crazy batter trick.
