A Choice...
Posted by the real red baron on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 1:29 AM

I have a quite difficult choice to make, my parents bought me a $265 air compressor. Julez72 was so nice as too give me a free Badger Cresendo 175 dual action airbrush. But it didnt have a cap for the thing that holds the paint.

I'm not aware of whats needed to look after and maintain an airbrush.

Now the choice is this:
1- Keep the compressor, buy a paint cap for the airbrush and make a paint booth.
2- Take back the compressor and get heaps of cans of tamiya spray paint.

I have no idea what is needed to maintain a airbrush, or i dont know how much a Badger Cresendo 175's paint cap is.

Thanks in advance! Big Smile

Keep the airbrush, look for a cap but in the meantime use saranwrap to cover the paint cup.  The airbrush will last a lifetime and let you have a lot of painting options where you will have to continue to buy spraycans with a lot less control.  If you want to learn how to look after the airbrush, just look into the forums

Does the 175 normally come with a cap for the colour cup?

I thought caps were usually reserved for gravity fed brushes.

In any case, I think it's a moot point.  I'd definitely keep the 175.  I haven't used one, but hear they are a pretty good a/b from others here on the forum.

I have a paasche H which is siphon fed and it doesn't come with or require a cap for the colour cup, so i'm assuming the 175 wouldn't need one either.

If you were using so much paint that there was a risk of it spilling, i think you'd be switching to a jar in any event.

loggerbruce70 is spot on.  The a/b will last a lifetime.  Spraycans won't.  Also, spraycans don't offer much artistic flexibility when it comes to painting.  They won't compare to an a/b.

Further, if you've got a great compressor, you're made!

As for maintaining an a/b, there are a heap of articles out and about on how to clean and look after them.

A great starting point for you might be Don Wheeler's website (he's a forum member on here): https://sites.google.com/site/donsairbrushtips/home

Don has a heap of info on that website including a review of the 175 - take the time to read through it all, you'll learn a lot.

Good luck and look forward to seeing some of your builds painted with the a/b.

If you are referring to the paint jar adaptor, (part #23 in the diagram on this page: http://www.badgerairbrush.com/PDF/Model%20175%20Crescendo.pdf ) you can find one here: http://www.expected.com.au/badger-fast-blast-jar-adaptor.html  A whole $7.95 (+ shipping)

Your airbrush will be far more versatile than any spray can. Learn to use it. Smile

Part 25 is the optional colour cup - this does not have a cap.

You just have to remember not to overfill, move the brush too sharply or tilt the brush too much. Big Smile

Ask Julez72 who gave you the airbrush. Whoelse is more qualified to teach you how to use and maintain the airbrush than the former owner.

TRRB: just jumped over and took a look - liking the progress so far.  Good addition of the seatbelts too - probably something that I should do more often.

I'll be sure to keep following your build.
