Future floor wax VS. Tamiya clear gloss
Posted by knoxb on Monday, October 3, 2011 6:14 PM

So I have my tank all sprayed with Buff X-57...now ready for a clear gloss coat.  I've heard some people use Future Floor wax, maybe mixed with a little Tamiya thinner or IPA.  Why not just use Tamiya clear gloss (especially over Tamiya paint)?

Is the Future floor wax a harder surface, possibly better suited to the weathering steps?

I can't tell you it's a harder surface, but I can say it's a very good surface for decals and weathering.  The main advantage I find is cost.  A bottle of for the cost of 2 bottles of Tamiya Clear I can get a bottle of Future which is about 60x the volume.

The future can be airbrushed straight- no thinning or mixing necessary.  Just put it in the brush and spray.  Dont put it on too thick, apply 2 or 3 thinner coats.

I agree with Mike!  Go with Future!  You'll get a lot more bang for your buck; especially with Tamiya paints still being kinda hard to get...at least they are here in North Texas.

Future is massively cheaper & works fine with airbrushing or hand-brushing. No thinning needed, but you can if you want to. I've been using the same bottle for years.  (I decant a little bit into a small bottle to actually "use" from, refill it when needed.) Bonus: it smells nice!

Can't tell you anything Tamiya clear gloss, except it would take dozens of cans to coat my kitchen floor! Wink

im gonna Ditto with the Future. It's heck of a lot cheaper, you get a lot of it for a cheap price, and at least where Im at, its easier to find. Once cured, it creates a pretty tough clear gloss for decals and weathering. I've never thinned the stuff, and dunno why you would...its the consistency of water anyway. I also brush it on my models. It self-levels so you dont have to worry abut brush strokes, and if you get a puddle, just dip a Qtip in future and scrub at it. Its that easy!

Ditto to all of the above.

Also, although many call it "Future Floor Wax" it is really not a wax at all, it is just a clear acrylic basically and very inexpensive. It lasts for years as was mentioned but it can, over time, loose it's strength and needs to be replaced. Someone once told it's shelf life but I can't remember exactly what that was.

I'd say it is just short of that of plutonium!  I'm working on a bottom I bought nearly 7 years ago.

I just stopped to count, I think my bottle was bought when I was just finishing up college in 2000.... wonder if there's a stamp on the label I can check out? Big Smile

Overseas I believe it is sold as Johnson's Klear iirc.

Yep. we have Johnson's Klear, but it has now been improved, and I am getting mixed reviews on it. Tell me, is Future a milky colour or clear?

you could try the new Klear on a scrap piece of plastic ans see if it dries clear? I dont think they would offer a floor polish that will turns things milky white!

I've seen "Future" in 3 different labels over the past 5 years or so. The latest one says "Pledge Floor care, with future shine". Same stuff, different name. I've had three bottles for years now and have only used half of one. The stuff lasts forever. It seems shelf life is no factor, I just make sure I keep it out of sunlight.

I have found a supply of the old future while travelling abroad and will be try this out. Given it was bought in an out of the way place who knows how long it has been on the shelf.  However, on another forum a member has suggested a replacement product he seems to have test exstensively called quick shine which is available in the uk and is similiar if not better with similiar costing
