Back into models after a 50 year break. There are no hobby shops near me so I pretty much use waterbased paints from the local craft store. While they are not all real glossy what could I put in the paint to get a real flat finish? Thanks for any ideas, Chuck

Just spray them with a clear flat after you decal them... Test the paints on a piece of scrap before you spray the model though.. And MASK any clear parts installed before you spray it..

I have used polyurethane varnish as a clear coat.  Thinned 50/50 it works fine in my air brush and comes in gloss, matt, and semi-matt.  Compatible with decals.

Have not used it .over many waterbased paints so am not sure of its compatibility with them, but easy enough to do a test.  Urethane is compatible with enamels and lacquers.

if my local shop doesn't have it or can't get it then i know it's going to be hard to find. my local shop looks more like a model shop then hobby shop.

tamiya 1/48 P-47D $25 + shipping

tamiya 1/48 mosquito $20+ shipping

hobby boss 1/48 F-105G. wings and fuselage cut from sprue. $40+ shipping.

Is ordering online not an option???  There are plenty of online retailers- Squadron, Sprue Bros, etc...  I always wait till I have multiple items to order so the shipping is less of an issue.  Honestly, if you order multiple items at a time it ends up cheaper than a local hobby shop!  (I still buy from LHS to support them though.)

look into liquitex products. all craft stores carry their products. they should have something to add to create a flat finish.

Hi Chuck,

Welcome back to the hobby.  Not sure what you can get at a craft shop to flatten your paints.  You could try getting some flat clear spray (think Krylon) to give an overall flat finish to your painted model.
